Action Requested
Contact your House Representative and urge him or her to sign-on to the proposed Tonko-Baldwin-Capps “Dear Colleague” letter requesting that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) preserve Medicare beneficiary access to clinical social work services under Medicare. Time is short, congressional supporters have set a sign-on deadline of 2 p.m., Tuesday, August 24th. Your email messages are needed now. Send your message immediately using the sample letter linked on this page.
Background
Several days ago NASW sent out an Action Alert on proposed Medicare payment reductions for clinical social workers and psychologists. This previous alert (see here) urged administrative action on the 2011 Medicare fee schedule proposed by CMS. However, we now have congressional supporters, and we need to support their intervention on social workers’ behalf. Our first objective is to add more congressional supporters on the proposed Tonko-Baldwin-Capps “Dear Colleague” letter.
Social workers and the American Psychological Association working together have identified three champions of this issue in the U.S. House, Reps. Paul D. Tonko (D-NY), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Lois Capps (D-CA). The three are spearheading a letter from House members to Donald Berwick, M.D., the CMS Administrator, urging the agency to consider the harm that the MEI revision in the proposed rule will have on Medicare mental health services. We are hopeful a strong letter from Congress will persuade CMS to reconsider the revision before the rule is finalized. Details on the proposed rate reduction are available in the recent NASW alert, here.
